yawcam on service not launching .exe

Postby catshavefur » Wed Mar 28, 2012 8:17 pm

Hey there,

Been using Yawcam for a few months now. Gotta say, it's awesome. Kudos to you great people for creating this excellent piece of ware and especially for making it free. I hope to donate as soon as I can.

Anyway I've come across some issues recently and I'd like to know how to get around them. I wouldn't call myself much of a whiz when it comes to computers but I've always been lucky enough to read myself through the most complicated instructions successfully so I've kinda learned a few things along the way.

1) Yawcam doesn't seem to want to launch my .exe when it's started as a service. I've done the Component Services thing with all possible log on settings (even went as far as guessing it needed "Allow service to interact with desktop". But i know it's not necessary for me to change anything there coz I'm the only user and admin on the pc. Even done the command prompt debug and everything seems fine.

When I launch Yawcam normally, however, the .exe launches flawlessly with the flick of my hand (i.e. motion detection).

I think it has something to do with the the rights of the service. Or something I never thought of?

2) This one is more of a suggestion. Is there any way to enable a password to open the application when bringing it up from the notification area icons? Most other monitoring apps have this feature.

Thanks!

Firewall Issues Maybe?

Postby jdrake4 » Tue Apr 10, 2012 5:41 am

I could not connect in windows 7, as a service, however launching as a seperate program works great.
I discovered that the windows firewall was blocking. If you disable the firewall, or add a rule for Yawcam_service.exe all is great.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. Was checking everyday for someone to suggest something. Guess all the others are too busy.

I did think of that and just as I thought, it changed nothing.

Thing is, there's nothing wrong with my connecting or streaming. It's just that when I've set up an application (.exe) to be launched with motion detection, it only does it if the UI app is running.

If I close the actual app and instead run it as a service (so that I can have it launch with Windows surreptitiously), the streaming, email, and everything else in motion detection works just fine. Except it no longer launches the .exe

Yes, I can make the app run when Windows starts too and the .exe launch will happen on motion detection, but it's still not the same as running it as a service. Inconspicuous etc.

At this point, I'm lost. Are services, by design, unable to launch other apps?

Perhaps your exe is not local to your computer or tries to run something that requires permissions. what exe are you trying to launch and what does it do?
