How to view a webcam from another PC on my home network?

Post by RogeratCCCC »

Sorry for my ignorance. All I want to do is view my webcam from another PC on my home network and I can’t find any instructions for how to do it. I would prefer NOT to modify my router and I don’t think I need to just for local network access. I don’t need internet access.

So far, I have installed YawCam and it shows the preview pane with a streaming image from the camera.

What do I do next? or are there instructions somewhere that explain how to do this? Thanks for any suggestions.

Answered my own question:

Go to What's my URL?; take that URL and put it into a browser on the other computer.

Are there any instructions that provide more information?

Thanks.

You are correct in assuming that for local access you don't need to do any modifications to your router.

For local access, you will need:
1) Yawcam configured and running.
2) IP address of the Yawcam computer.
3) Another PC for viewing.

Once you got Yawcam configured, with Stream and/or HTTP, remember the port number you used, defaults are 8081 and 8888.

Now you will need to find the IP address of your computer. The easiest way is to execute the command "ipconfig" in a command prompt.
1) Click Start -> Run (or type in the search bar for Vista and 7).
2) Type "cmd" without quotes and press ENTER.
3) At the command prompt, type "ipconfig" without quotes and press ENTER.
4) You will see IP address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. That is your IP address.
It should be something along the lines of 192.168.x.xxx.

You can now go to your other computer for viewing and open an internet browser.
In the address bar, type http://[Your-IP-ADDRESS]:8081 or http://[Your-IP-ADDRESS]:8888.
In my case, for local access, I'd have http://192.168.2.102:8888.
Press enter and you should see your webcam.

If you have problems connecting, make sure your firewall has an exception on either the port you are using or the application, such as javaw.exe or Yawcam_service.exe.
