Motion detection: how to prevent lights interfering?

How do I make it alert only on actual motion but not when lights are being turned on/off? There must be away to configure it to detect actual motion only instead of a single change in the image which is not motion but lights going on or off. I've been experimenting but no luck so far.

I've tried many configuration "tweeks" and I still get emails/txts sent even when there is no motion at all, including in the middle of the night, pitch black. I've had to turn on "flood control" , set at 600 seconds (10 minutes) in the email settings so I don't get so many emails/txts. Maybe the developer can advise on the best settings for motion detection alerts.

Max filter - Motion events will not be triggered if the amount of motion is more than this percent. This is good to avoid a motion event when a change in light condition (or camera exposure) results in that almost all pixels in the image change at the same time.

Hi jkost,

Thank you for this tip! I was able to configure the Max Filter value to ignore when one of the neighboring apartment's security lights turns off. Yet the neighboring apartment's security light does turn on when it detects the headlights of automobiles driving up the back alley. This isn't ignored since there are some changes in brightness in some areas of the scene, such that the change in brightness triggers the security light to turn on. I actually do want this short video since I do want to know when cars drive through the back alley. The upshot is that by adjusting the Max Filter value, I have been able to prevent Yawcam from recording brief videos when the adjacent building's security light simply turns off after several minutes. I further tested by sticking my hand out my front door. This was enough to trigger Yawcam. The upshot is that your tip about adjusting the Max Filter value now is allowing Yawcam to only record true motion events, yet not record when the adjacent building's security light simply turns off. Thanks a million for your post.

Best regards,

I installed and started testing Yawcam only a couple of hours ago. The default settings generally are quite good. I have encountered one issue which is video camera noise in low light conditions randomly triggering the motion detection filter. This could be alleviated by internally performing a simple 1 pixel blur function (not a Gaussian blur function which is more CPU intensive) in order to make the frame-by-frame inherent low light noise plummet by close to an order of magnitude when comparing a given video frame with the reference video frame. This would be really slick if this was implemented. Thinking about it, this shouldn't be very difficult to implement as an automatic function.
